NOVEMBER 2015
The National Beagle Performance Pack Association (NBPPA)’s mission is to encourage and promote quality in the breeding of purebred beagles and to do all possible to bring their natural qualities to perfection, to urge members and breeders to set a standard of excellence by which beagles shall be judged, to do all in its power to protect and advance the interests of the breed by encouraging sportsmanlike competition, to conduct sanctioned and unsanctioned field trials in accordance with the UKC Performance Pack Rules, to conduct judging workshops or seminars for the UKC Performance Pack judges. This article will serve as a refresher to what the NBPPA offers to the beagle field trial community and ways we promote excellence in our hounds.
In previous years, the NBPPA has run its point’s race from August 1st-July 31st each year. It has been discussed amongst members and the board to implement a change to better serve the members. The points year will now follow the calendar year, January 1st-December 31st. This would stay congruent with that of the United Kennel Club, as well as other organizations. Therefore, for the first year to adjust for the change, the year started August 1st, 2015 and will run through December 31st, 2016. Every year after that will run the normal calendar year. We hope to see increased participation with making this change.
Normally a major event that kicks off our year in the fall has also now been changed to go along with our calendar year. The NBPPA Open will now be held in the spring rather than the fall. The date is currently being discussed with the UKC and will be announced soon. This hunt includes the NBPPA Open Runoff, which is by invitation only. All dogs that have won a cast at an NBPPA sectional in the point’s year and owners are paid members will be invited to this runoff. You may pay your dues upon entering that morning. If there are ever any questions about if which dogs are included in this event, feel free to contact the secretary, and he’ll gladly check for you. All dogs, regardless of category, will run together. For a prize, Purina donates $1,000 plus all entry money (minus judging fees) are put into the pot and split amongst the final cast, 50%, 30%, and 20%.
The Top Ten Runoff will also be held on the Friday before a state hunt in the spring, since the calendar year now ends in December. The clubs will put in to hold this runoff and be voted upon by the board. This event is for dogs that have finished in the top ten for the point’s year in each category. An invitation will be sent out to those dogs that have made the cut. If there are any questions, the final points can be found on our website or, again, by contacting the secretary. At this hunt, there are prizes given to the top three dogs in each category.
Now that the runoffs have been discussed, you are probably wondering how the dogs earn these points. Points can only be earned at clubs that have chosen to hold an NBPPA sectional. These points will be tallied throughout the point’s year and dogs compete for high point in each category, Registered, Champion and Grand Champion. They are updated on the NBPPA’s website.
In order to receive the points at a NBPPA hunt:
If anyone is interested in holding an NBPPA Hunt, please contact the secretary to get this scheduled. These hunts must be posted to the NBPPA website 30 days prior. They are also listed on UKC’s Upcoming Events listing. In order for a state to obtain a prize package for their state hunt, they need to hold a total of 6 NBPPA Hunts in the year. They can be spread out throughout all clubs in that state. The cost to hold an NBPPA Hunt is $50. However, after the state has a total of 6, the price drops to $25. It is best for clubs in the same state to work together and schedule the hunts.
The NBPPA also has a couple of honors given to dogs that have achieved many things in the field. The achievements that we recognize are Competition Hall of Fame, Reproducer Hall of Fame and Master Beagler. All of the requirements have been listed below, but can also be found on our website. Once you feel your dog as attained 50 points, contact the secretary.
Competition Hall of Fame
Total points required - 50
Hall of Fame Reproducer

For any son/daughter that receives top three places in the NBPPA runoff or ( UKC Runoff)

Total Points Required: 125 points
These achievements are recognized annually at the NBPPA Open. If you have any questions regarding these awards, contact an NBPPA Board Member and they’d be glad to help.
The NBPPA is involved in supporting the youth of our sport. One way in which this occurs is through the Youth Apprentice of the Year Scholarship. This is available to a youth trialer that is in high school and has apprenticed the most during the NBPPA year. When a youth participant apprentices with a field judge, that judge can fill out an apprenticeship form (obtained from UKC). These forms can be mailed to the recording secretary. They do not go into the UKC office like other judge’s apprenticeship forms. This scholarship was put into place to encourage the youth of our sport to be active in the trials, creating a new group of judges for years to come.
The Youth Apprentice is not the only scholarship that the NBPPA awards each year. The second scholarship is available to any person continuing their education. This involves filling out an application that is found on the NBPPA website. It is based on that person’s involvement with the NBPPA, the UKC, and beagle field trialing, as a whole. This is a $500 scholarship that is awarded annually. The deadline for this scholarship is August 1st, 2015. We encourage anyone that is planning on continuing their education and active in beagle field trials.
One event that the NBPPA puts on is the annual Youth Championship. It is open to all youth in high school and below. Participants are able to hunt a dog in each category. Scholarships are also awarded to the participants who place first and second in each division. There are also many prizes given away through a free raffle, regardless of placements. It’s a great time for kids to learn about the sport and parents to have fun with their children. The most important part of the sport is getting the kids involved and the NBPPA is heavily devoted to getting this done.
For anyone that is interested in becoming more informed on the NBPPA, we invite any members to join our monthly conference calls. These are held the second Tuesdays of each month at 6:00pm CST. A variety of topics are discussed on these calls and members are always welcome to join in. This is when new ideas are brought in and many changes made to the organization. If you’d like to take part in the conference calls, contact anyone on the board and they’ll get the information relayed to you.
Lastly, if anyone would like to join the NBPPA, you can join at any NBPPA hunt, print a form off the website or pay via PayPal off the website. The price is $20 annually and that enables a member to be eligible for the prize packages at the state hunts, to earn points at the NBPPA hunts and people must be members to participate in the runoffs.
The NBPPA is looking forward to the future of the Performance Pack program and seeing new faces this fall at the field trials. See you next month!
